Roger’s Journey Toward a Forever Home

How compassionate support and safe shelter helped Roger begin rebuilding his life.

Roger never imagined he would need a place like Central Arizona Shelter Services.

For most of his life, he was the one people depended on. In his 60s, Roger had built his identity around hard work, responsibility, and providing for others. He spent years focused on supporting his family, showing up for work, and doing what needed to be done. Asking for help was never something he thought he would have to do.

But life took an unexpected turn for Roger.

What started as a temporary place to stay soon became nights spent moving from couch to couch, trying not to overstay his welcome. Roger kept believing things would turn around soon that he would find another place, another opportunity, another way forward. Instead, his options slowly disappeared.

When the last couch was no longer available, Roger found himself with nowhere left to go.

Night after night, he wandered through Phoenix searching for somewhere safe to rest. He tried to stay unnoticed. He tried to keep moving. He tried to hold onto the dignity and independence he had carried his entire life.

One evening, exhausted from days without proper sleep, Roger sat down at a bus stop hoping to rest for just a little while. Instead, he was awakened by Phoenix Police officers asking him to move along.

It was the fifth bus stop he had been forced to leave that night.

“I was evicted a week ago,” Roger told Phoenix Police officers. “I’m tired, hungry, and thirsty… where do people like me go?”

For the first time in a long time, Roger admitted he needed help. With nowhere else to turn and no family able to support him, Phoenix Police officers brought Roger to CASS’ single adult shelter in downtown Phoenix. Walking through the doors was not easy.

Like many people experiencing homelessness later in life, Roger carried not only exhaustion, but also uncertainty, fear, and embarrassment. Homelessness was never part of the life he imagined for himself.

But at CASS, Roger found something he hadn’t had in weeks: stability.

Our team quickly connected Roger with case management support and began working to identify what he needed most. It became clear that Roger would benefit from a quieter, more supportive environment designed specifically for older adults navigating homelessness. Soon after arriving downtown, Roger was moved to The Haven — CASS’ shelter program designed to provide older adults with greater privacy, safety, and stability while they work toward permanent housing.

For Roger, the transition changed everything.

At The Haven, he finally had a room of his own. A place where he could close the door, sleep through the night, and breathe without constantly wondering where he would end up next. For the first time in weeks, Roger wasn’t focused solely on surviving the next few hours. He finally had space to think clearly again.

No scrambling from place to place.
No searching for somewhere safe to rest.
No uncertainty about where he would sleep each night.

Just stability.

Just peace.
Just a chance to begin rebuilding.

Today, Roger is working closely with his case manager to create a housing plan and take the next steps toward permanent stability. The road forward will still take time, but now he has support, resources, and a real opportunity to move toward a forever home.

Stories like Roger’s are becoming increasingly common across our community.More older adults are experiencing homelessness for the first time, often after a sudden eviction, rising housing costs, medical challenges, or the loss of family support. Many never imagined they would find themselves in this position.

But with compassionate care, safe shelter, and community support, healing and stability become possible again. Because of supporters like you, people like Roger don’t have to face homelessness alone. Your generosity helps provide shelter, safety, case management, and pathways to permanent housing for neighbors who simply need a chance to begin again.

And today, Roger finally has that chance.
