Reduce Your Arizona State Taxes

What Is the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit?
Arizona’s tax code allows residents to make donations to certified nonprofits (Qualifying Charitable Organizations, or QCOs) and receive a dollar-for-dollar credit on their state income taxes. This means your gift to CASS can directly reduce what you owe the state, not just act as a deduction. CASS is a certified QCO (QCO Code: 20328) and qualifies under this program.
How Much Credit Can You RECEIVE?
- Single filer / Head of household / Married filing separately: up to $495
- Married filing jointly: up to $987
Why Use It?
- You get a direct reduction in your state tax bill — not just a deduction.
- Your donation goes directly to CASS’ work—helping shelter, support, and housing for our neighbors in need.
- You don’t have to itemize to claim it.
You may use this credit whether or not you itemize deductions.
Unclaimed credits may also be carried forward for up to five years.
How to Claim Your Credit
- Make your gift by April 15 of the tax year (or by April 15 of the following year to count it for the prior year)
- Keep your donation receipt with your tax records.
- Fill out AZ Form 321 (Credit for Contributions to Qualifying Charitable Organizations) when you file your Arizona return and include your QCO Code (20328).
- Submit your return with Form 321 attached.
If your total credits exceed your state tax liability, unused credits may be carried forward (up to five years).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I give any amount?
Yes — even small gifts qualify toward the credit, as long as the total claimed does not exceed limits.
Do I have to itemize on my return?
No — the credit works even for those taking the standard deduction.
What if I already gave to public school or foster care tax credits?
You can claim multiple credits. Donations to CASS (a QCO) are separate from public school or foster care credits.
When is the deadline?
April 15 of the following year is the cutoff to have your contribution count toward the prior year’s Arizona tax credit.
What if I don’t owe state taxes?
The credit is nonrefundable — it can reduce your tax liability to zero, but it won’t generate a refund by itself. Unused credits may be carried forward.
